Drama/Theatre Arts

Drama/Theatre Arts classes are available at every grade level offered at Shelton. Students in EC through Primary perform in our annual Lower School SPECTACULAR, which includes drama skits, music, dance and film created by our youngest performers. In grades 3/4 and 5th, Drama is a "specials" class that every student takes, allowing exposure to creative dramatics and play production. In Middle School (6th through 8th grades), Drama is an elective class, typically culminating in a short performance in our Black Box Theatre. Additionally, 8th grade students can opt to perform with Choir students in a yearly musical. Past musicals include The Music Man, Jr., Matilda, Jr., Newsies, Jr. and Into the Woods, Jr.

By Upper School, Theatre Arts includes classes in both performance and technical theatre. Upper School Theatre Arts also includes after-school productions, including a fall play, winter musical and spring one-act play festivals. Students audition for performance roles, while tech students sign up to join Crew positions such as Set Construction, Lighting, Sound, Props or Costume Crews.

Past plays include Sense and Sensibility, Meet Me in St. Louis, Twelfth Night, Agatha Christie’s The Secret Adversary and The Matchmaker. Past musical performances include Annie, Shrek the Musical, The Drowsy Chaperone, The Sound of Music, Bye Bye Birdie and Footloose.

Additional opportunities in Theatre Arts include Performing Arts Club where Upper School students and teachers attend professional area performances such as Broadway tours, operas or symphonies. PAC typically attends three to four performances each year. Recent performances include A Christmas Carol at Dallas Theater Center, The Play That Goes Wrong at Water Tower Theatre and Back to the Future at Broadway Dallas.
