Teacher with Class

Shelton admits learning-different students of any race, color, religion, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national and ethnic origin in the administration of our educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.

Shelton Teacher Training

The Shelton Teacher Training department offers training for educators, parents, and the community. Training registrations and payments may be made online and materials are for sale in the Training & Materials Store. The materials support the coursework and implementation of our varied programs. Members of the Shelton Teacher Training staff also oversee the Shelton Scholars Program and the Summer Program allowing students not attending Shelton's full-time school to have the opportunity to experience Shelton's academic programs.

Training Opportunities include:

Since 1976, Shelton School has been serving intelligent students with learning differences (LD). Parents actively seeking help for children with dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or speech and language disorders usually learn of the school, which each year opens its doors to more than 800 students, grades preschool through twelve. Professionals in the field hear of Shelton's success and attest to its solid reputation.

Early on, Shelton staff realized that they could not possibly respond individually to all those seeking help for learning differences. The need is simply too great, with one out of seven Americans having some type of learning disability. Yet the school's keen desire (and challenge) has been to help more than its own student body and thus the Shelton Teacher Training department was born in 1991.

Since then, Outreach Teacher Training has trained more than 3,547 teachers in the DuBard Association, Montessori, MTA-Multisensory Teaching Approach, Sequential English Education and Take Flight programs. With the help of grants, it launched two large-scale literacy projects to help teachers and students in Texas and Mississippi. In addition, the Outreach Teacher Training department has helped more than 3,625 non-Shelton students through the Scholars Program.

Shelton Scholars

The Shelton Scholars program provides support to learning different students who have experienced difficulty in the traditional classroom
and who do not attend Shelton during the regular school day.

The program is available on Saturdays and in a Summer morning program. It is especially geared to help students ages six and above in:

  • reading
  • spelling
  • handwriting
  • auditory discrimination skills
  • memory.

We use the same Sequential English Education (SEE) curriculum used in our classrooms. Each student receives two hours of tutoring using a multisensory structured language (MSL) approach to reading along with one hour of auditory discrimination and memory training in a small group setting.

The average remediation time is three to four years. In order to insure that this program will meet the student's needs, an informal battery of tests is administered prior to admission. This evaluation includes pre-tests in reading, writing and spelling. Recent testing (in the past two years) from other evaluation centers can serve as admission testing upon approval of the Shelton Scholars Coordinator.
