Weather Closure Process
With Shelton students coming from 100 ZIP codes across the region, Texas weather's unpredictability poses unique challenges. The safety of students, parents, teachers and staff remains at the core of the difficult decision to close or delay school. Please be on the lookout for Shelton weather alerts via text, email, social media and updates on shelton.org regarding any school cancellations or delays.
How Do We Make Our Weather Closure Decision?
The decision to open or close school in bad weather is based on a careful analysis of all relevant factors, including:
- Information on road conditions from the National Weather Service, local news, staff and police. Even if your street is fine, travel elsewhere may be dangerous.
- The fact that some Upper School students drive to school.
- The amount of snow and ice accumulated.
- Whether precipitation is continuing.
- Building conditions, including electricity for heat.
- The condition of our parking lot.
- Weather predictions.
- The transportation of our food supply for school lunches.
- Athletic and school events.
- What other school districts are doing.
Who Makes the Decision?
Shelton Executive Director Suzanne Stell, the associate heads of school and the heads of school.
How Is the Public Notified?
The decision to close or delay school is communicated via:
- Text and email notifications.
- Posts on the school’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.
- Updates on shelton.org.
When Is the Decision Made?
Since our goal is to have school when weather permits, we typically wait as long as possible to make a decision. Waiting allows us to gather the most accurate weather conditions. However, we also consider the needs of parents who must get to work or arrange for child care. Notifications of school closures or delayed starts are made in the evening or by 6:00 a.m.
Will We Dismiss Early If Conditions Worsen?
If a decision is made to dismiss early, we will notify parents as soon as possible. We always stay with students until parents can arrive to pick them up.
What About Schoolwork?
Should the school close due to inclement weather, no new assignments will be given on the first day. If the school closes for additional days:
- First- through fifth-grade students will receive classwork sent home in their binder.
- Classwork and assignments for sixth- through twelfth-grade students will be posted in Google Classroom.
