YOU'RE INVITED TO A SCREENING OF THE FILM CONFETTI

In honor of World Dyslexia Month in October, Shelton will screen Confetti, an award-winning movie about dyslexia on Monday, Oct. 24, at 6 p.m. in Shelton's Black Box Theatre.

Confetti is written, produced and directed by award-winning New York-based filmmaker Ann Hu, based on her own experiences. The film illustrates the journey of a 9-year-old girl named Meimei, who moves with her mother, Lan, from their small town in China to New York City. Meimei has struggled to be accepted in her school and community, in part because no one has successfully noticed that she suffers from dyslexia. Lan braves the move to New York, but finding the right school proves to be even more difficult than she could have anticipated.

The film, which is appropriate for children 14 and up, has screened at Yale University, Harvard University, Chicago Foundation for Education, Teachers College Columbia University, The National Center for Learning Disabilities and more. In addition, the film will screen for the British Dyslexia Association followed by an opening night premiere at BAFTA in London followed by a special Gala Dinner at the House of Lords.

Following the film, there will be a panel discussion featuring parents Megan Carpenter, Jon Gross, Nellie Sciutto and Eric McGehearty and moderated by Shelton Executive Director Suzanne Stell.

SHELTON PRIDE: MEET SENIOR CALLIE WAKEFIELD

Grade: Senior

Learning differences: Dyslexia, dysgraphia and anxiety

Started at Shelton: Sixth grade

Clubs/sports: Co-Captain of Varsity Cross Country, Track, Senior Class President for Student Council, National Honor Society Historian, Photography Club and Performing Arts Club

What has been your favorite experience at Shelton? "Getting to go with my Cross Country Team to Waco to run in the TAPPS state meet. It was fun being able to compete against other competitive runners in the 4A division.  I also loved being able to be with my teammates and help the girls team to place third in 2019 and fourth in 2021."

Who has been your favorite teacher? "Dr. Franklin (Physics & Physics II). She has enthusiasm when she teaches, which makes the environment easier to learn. She makes her classes fun by having a good sense of humor. She has realistic expectations for us and knows what we're capable of. She's also very accommodating with everyone's different styles of learning."

How has Shelton impacted your life? "It has taught me different tools to help overcome my dyslexia and reading struggles as well as be successful in school. Some examples are learning how to utilize read and write software, keeping myself organized and teaching me how to advocate for myself, such as asking for a reader or extra time on tests or quizzes. I no longer feel embarrassed to ask for those things if I think they will help me."

Would you recommend Shelton? "Yes. I think it's a good balance of having the small classes and accommodations needed for students with a learning difference to be successful, but it also has all of the great things that come with a large school, such as things like football games, lots of clubs, pep rallies and school dances."

What are your college and career aspirations? "I plan to study Marine Biology in college.  I hope to get a Master's degree and maybe even a Ph.D. in Marine Biology. I would love to one day do research on sharks or on coral reef ecosystems."

What is a fun/surprising fact about you?  "I'm SCUBA certified and I was able to SCUBA dive in the Georgia Aquarium with two whale sharks for my sixteenth birthday."

What are you looking forward to this year? "I'm looking forward to helping plan events with the student council and I'm excited to participate in all the fun senior activities that are planned for this year. Lastly, I'm excited to be running again after a stress fracture in my hip this past spring and to be able to compete in State again this year for cross country."
