SPECIAL EDITION!

Parents' Association Gift to School & Star of Shelton Awards

Welcome to our special edition of the Scoop!

First, we'd like to thank all of our Shelton parents for your support, volunteer hours, contributions, and attendance at our SPA-sponsored events.

With your help, this year we raised a whopping $560,520 for our school!

The Shelton Parents' Association (with a little help from our Shelton mascot, Sunny) presented Executive Director Suzanne Stell with a check at our recent year-end luncheon. The funds raised will benefit every division and many of our clubs and activities. We couldn't have done it without you.

Thank you!

At the SPA year-end luncheon, we also took a moment to recognize six Stars of Shelton - senior parents who have made significant contributions to our school. We asked each of them to share the things they love about Shelton. We invite you to read their replies here.

We're very grateful for the time, talent, and financial contributions our senior families have shared. We'll miss you all!

Mickie Bragalone & Annabelle

"The Shelton answer is "yes" and the approach is always from the affirmative. One of my memorable moments was Annabelle's first parent/teacher conference. I was struck with the approach from the 'yes' perspective – in that conference and in everyone one since then, the focus has been to affirm Annabelle's accomplishments and to ask what the teachers and school can do to help her move forward in her studies and goals. That attitude starts at the top – in the office of Executive Director, Suzanne Stell, and it has made all the difference.

The teachers are the life blood of Shelton. In athletic parlance, the bench is deep.

The SPA – an amazing organization of parents. I have made new life-long friends with whom I feel I will always share the unique bond of parenting and advocating for children who learn differently."

"Shelton's indomitable commitment to the whole child. Shelton celebrates and encourages the unique strengths of each child, while continuing to work on their weaknesses.

The teachers each of my kids have had are devoted professionals. They have known my kids, cared about them, supported them, and even pushed them to help them do more than they thought they could.

The Shelton Students that I have had a chance to meet and get to know through my kids or my various tasks at Shelton are remarkable people. They are engaging, bright, and entertaining."

Mandy Gildersleeve & Timmy

"Tom and I moved our family half way across the U.S. five years ago from the only home our children knew in Jacksonville, Florida for Timmy to attend Shelton.

We knew we needed to find a school that would teach Timmy "how he learns" and to be a self-advocate to be successful in college and life and to allow him to have a well rounded high school experience.

Shelton also taught Timmy how to study and communicate with his teachers.

Shelton has given Timmy the necessary study organizational skills to be successful in college and life"

"The collaborative approach to parent conferences at Shelton allows everyone to better understand and learn. It promotes self-advocacy for the student and provides solutions that can be carried from class to class and at home.

Opportunity, Acceptance & Lack of Bullying! Shelton provides an environment where all students feel free to be themselves.

Staff and Fellow Parents! I have met and worked with such talented and kind people since we arrived five years ago!"

"When you send your child to school, you hope he'll be inspired and challenged...that he'll discover his superpowers and identify his weaknesses, then learn how to adapt  or to even overcome them. You hope he'll make friends and discover a place where he can  make a difference. All those things happened for our son at Shelton.

What surprised me is that they happened for me too. I also found a place where I could make a difference. And I made some good friends – with people who are committed, fun, smart and ridiculously talented.

And then there's Shelton's amazing staff and faculty. Working with Theresa Bruno, Suzanne Stell, Dawn Williams and dear Anne Thomas has been a total delight. I love our Shelton family and your giant hearts"

Cole

"Shelton brought light and hope into our family during a very dark and uncertain time.

Shelton restored the fun, joyful spirit and self-confidence back into our son while providing a supportive environment and encouraging teachers who helped him 'love to learn' again.

Shelton has helped Cole develop a confident identity in his strengths and weaknesses. He is openly willing to share his story with others so that they too can find peace."
