Texas Education Freedom Accounts Information

Shelton is participating in TEFA based on the rules currently published by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. This program, administered by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, is designed to help families access funds for eligible education-related expenses beginning in the 2026–27 school year. For families of students who learn differently, TEFA may offer financial support that helps offset the cost of specialized education.
Shelton’s participation in TEFA reflects our commitment to helping families access the resources and opportunities that best support children with learning differences. As the largest independent school in the world for intelligent students with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, auditory processing disorders and speech-language disorders, we are a resource for families of students who learn differently.
TEFA Application Period
The TEFA family application portal opened Feb. 4, 2026, and closed March 31, 2026.
According to TEFA, families who applied will receive award notifications directly from Odyssey, the state’s TEFA program administrator, by the end of April 2026. Award notifications will include each family’s total TEFA award amount.
According to TEFA, the Texas Comptroller has completed the initial distribution of Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) awards for the 2026-2027 school year. Tier 1 students were awarded first, followed by more than 51,000 Tier 2 students selected through the lottery process.
Participating schools, including Shelton, will begin receiving notifications on May 11 when families accept TEFA funding and select their school. Families on the waitlist will also begin receiving information about their approximate waitlist position.
Additional awards may become available throughout the summer as families make decisions or opt out of the program.

Texas Education Freedom Accounts

Starting in the 2026–27 school year, funds will be made available to eligible students accepted into the program that can be applied to tuition or other approved education expenses.
Shelton has elected to apply and participate in the program. Applications for families will be available in February 2026 through the Texas State Comptroller.
