Texas Education Freedom Accounts Information

Shelton will participate in TEFA based on the rules currently published by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. This program, administered by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, is designed to help families access funds for eligible education-related expenses beginning in the 2026–27 school year. For families of students who learn differently, TEFA may offer financial support that helps offset the cost of specialized education.

Shelton’s participation in TEFA reflects our commitment to helping families access the resources and opportunities that best support children with learning differences. As the largest independent school in the world for intelligent students with learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, auditory processing disorders and speech-language disorders, we are a resource for families of students who learn differently.

We encourage families to research the TEFA program. The TEFA family application portal is scheduled to open on February 4, 2026, and close on March 17, 2026. Shelton will continue to keep you informed as more information becomes available, and we will provide further updates in January.

On Jan. 15, 2026, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) issued updated guidance regarding the collection of special education data, including IEPs, for private school students applying for TEFA. View the TEA correspondence here: link.

This page will be updated as the State of Texas releases new information.

Starting in the 2026–27 school year, funds will be made available to eligible students accepted into the program that can be applied to tuition or other approved education expenses.

Shelton has elected to apply and participate in the program. Applications for families will be available in February 2026 through the Texas State Comptroller.
