Shelton Pride: Senior Austin Bertino Earned an $84,000 Scholarship to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Plans to Study Electrical Engineering

What are your learning differences?
I have seven learning differences, including ADD, Dyslexia, Auditory Processing and Language Expression.

When did you start at Shelton?
I started attending Shelton in first grade, making this my twelfth year here.

What clubs and extracurriculars are you in?
I am involved in Band as the lead trumpet, Drumline as Bass Captain, Film, Broadcast and Theatre as an Assistant Stage Manager.

What has been your favorite experience at Shelton?
My favorite experience at Shelton was the ISAS Fine Arts Festival during my junior year. It was great to spend time with friends.

Who has been your favorite teacher?
As much as I have loved every one of my teachers, my favorite by far has been Mr. Crabtree. He truly knows what he’s talking about and has been very informative about many historical events.

What's the best advice you've received?
The best advice I have ever received is to be more involved at Shelton.

How has Shelton impacted your life?
Shelton made it possible for me to learn and believe in school after my first school all but gave up on me. I don’t think I would be where I am without Shelton.

Would you recommend Shelton?
I would recommend Shelton, as it has helped me tremendously throughout the years.

What are your college and career aspirations?
I have not committed to a college yet, but I hope to attend Texas A&M, as it is the best school for engineering in the state, with the University of Texas and the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology as my next options. I received an $84,000 scholarship for Rose-Hulman, a school in Terre Haute, Indiana. I hope to become an electrical or a mechanical engineer in the future.

What is a surprising fact about you?
Something that won’t be surprising to anyone who knows me, but might be to others, is that I am an avid reader, especially of a sci-fi universe called Warhammer.
