Welcome to the Shelton Speech Department
The Shelton School Speech Department was created to serve Shelton students who need speech and language therapy. We typically see groups of 2-4 students twice a week during the school day. The groups are matched by strengths and weaknesses in the following areas: Language, Articulation, Voice, Fluency (stuttering), and Pragmatics. Students grade EC - 8 qualify for speech therapy based on their admissions testing and yearly testing. Group speech and language therapy services are provided as a part of the tuition cost.
Other Speech Programs
Social Skills
In addition to group therapy, the school speech department offers social skills groups, PALS, Lunch Bunch, and PEERS, which meet once a week. We work on areas such as conversation skills, reading body language, and making friends.
Collaborating with Instructional Staff
Several times during the school year, speech therapists meet with teachers to share ideas. Together, they develop a lesson for the teacher's normal class that incorporates lessons and ideas usually focused on in speech such as Listening Comprehension and Visualizing & Verbalizing. Then, the speech therapist takes the curriculum ideas used and incorporates them into group therapy. For example, she may use science vocabulary when introducing antonyms. It is a very rewarding program.
